Repiping a home is a significant undertaking, but it becomes necessary when your plumbing system shows signs of aging, corrosion, or frequent leaks. Here are a few reasons why homeowners in Port St. Lucie and beyond choose to repipe:
Polybutylene is a flexible plastic supply pipe, grey, blue or black, usually stamped PB2110. It was used across Florida in homes built roughly between 1978 and 1995, and if you have it, the easiest place to spot it is at the water heater or the main shutoff where a run is often left visible.
The problem with it is the failure mode. Polybutylene degrades from the inside out, so the pipe looks sound right up until it splits, and there is usually no drip or stain to warn you first. That is also why insurers increasingly ask about it at renewal.
Replacing it means running new supply lines to every fixture and abandoning the old pipe in place. On a slab-on-grade house that normally means routing overhead through the attic and dropping down to each fixture, which avoids breaking the floor open.
PEX is flexible, so a run can be pulled through framing with far fewer joints, and fewer joints means fewer places to fail. It is what most repipes here use.
Copper costs more and takes longer to install, but it tolerates heat well and has the longest track record of the three.
CPVC sits between them and is common in existing Florida homes, so it is often what we are matching into rather than starting from.
Which one suits your house depends mostly on how the lines have to be routed. On slab-on-grade construction we run overhead through the attic rather than back under the concrete, and that routing usually favors PEX.
Your plumbing is important, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not an investment. We want to help our customers get the work they need without the stress, which is why we’ve partnered with Wisetack to bring you financing designed for you.
A repipe is the largest single job most homeowners on this site will book, so it is worth knowing you can spread it: Wisetack financing with no hard credit check, with terms up to 60 months.
